The exquisite fiber of the alpaca is only beginning to make its impression on the U.S. consumer.  The alpaca breeding industry in North America is nearly 20 years old, but when considered as a continuation of a multi-millennial textile story, the exciting period we are experiencing now is just the next chapter in a long, colorful story.

Unique among "luxury" fibers for its drape, sheen, and wonderfully smooth hand-feel, designers of apparel and textiles in Europe and Asia have been capitalizing on its properties for decades.  And while certain American consumers of luxury apparel have had exposure to alpaca textiles through the years, we are only now realizing the full potential of what lies ahead for the general population.  Today's average customer is readily positioned to respond to a product that perfectly embodies natural luxury.  And the market is providing more ways than ever to make use of this natural wonder in fabrications that are entirely made with alpaca, or in blends with other fibers. 

Alpaca fiber is almost indestructible.  Fine alpaca garments were discovered in Peruvian ruins dating back 2500 years, were in good condition.  Its extremely healthy and comfortable to wear.  The absence of lanolin and other oils in the fleece and its extraordinary fineness of handle mean that alpaca garments are both hypoallergenic and luxuriously soft on your skin.  Not scratchy like other garments made of coarse fiber.

High demand and limited supply equals an excellent financial market for alpaca fiber.  Owners can easily sell their fleece to private hand-spinners and industrial manufacturers and reduces the need for dyeing, which further protects and enhances the resilience, softness, flexibility, and hypoallergenic qualities of the fiber.
